Welcome to the Exit Workshop - the studio space that's full of gear for work and play
The Exit Workshop originally started as a side-project for me to continue my artistic pursuits, but it has since grown into a full-blown accessories brand that I now run full-time. To be able to continue to explore my roots in art and design while also keeping my focus on function and an object's interaction with its user is a dream that I never thought possible until recently.
All of my products have been inspired by snowboarding and winter sports culture. I've traveled the world chasing winter,
and it's been incredible to see how the snow sports culture embodies so many similar elements across the globe. Art, photography, athletics, nature, excessive beer consumption, adventure, and individuality are all core components of the lifestyle, but either way if you're outside and having fun, you're doing it right.
Exit started with toques (beanies) in 2012, with headwear being at the core of The Exit Workshop. Over the past 6 years the brand has grown to incorporate other items that are useful to those who spend much of their time outdoors. All of the products are staples in my backpack when I travel. Ultimately, however, my goal has always been the same - to hand-make functional items that will stand up to the elements and maintain their integrity trip after trip.
The challenge in learning to work with unfamiliar materials and textiles turned out to be a bonus in my design explorations. Teaching myself different techniques with the added element of batch production has tested my patience time and time again, but these experiences continue to inspire me to experiment, develop, and learn. I'm hard on all my gear, so it's important for me to be able to throw a toque or camera strap in the bottom of my pack and know that it's ready to go as soon as I need it. With that in mind, each product has been tested in the studio and in the field with development over time to ensure durability, ease of use, and style.
The past year has been spent exploring new fabrics and materials, which evolved into the creation of full-size wool blankets. All the fabrics and patterns have been specially chosen with warmth, aesthetic, and durability as the main focus. Each blanket is a great addition to any living space to add a pop of colour and some extra warmth, and they're also a great fit for any camping trip (particularly for transitional seasons like early spring and late fall). I love colour, so the discovery of my blanket fabric was an exciting time.
Photography and leather work are two domains in which I would like to grow. I have done all of the photography for Exit since its inception, and I have since fallen in love with my cameras. The transition from painting to photography felt seamless, and Exit
opened many doors for me to continue to explore the media. In 2016 I shot my first wedding with great success, and now offer full wedding and lifestyle packages. My online portfolio will be available soon, but in the meantime feel free to contact me for more information.
The next 2 goals for The Exit Workshop include the development of leather gloves, and to expand Exit's availability through various stockists across Canada. The idea for leather gloves came from the numerous inquiries for knit and crochet gloves. While my roots are in crochet, I have recently decided to reduce the time spent with a crochet hook or knitting needles in my hands to reduce repetitive strain. Therefore, continuing with leather and sewing is a natural progression (plus who doesn't love a good pair of leather gloves?). As for wholesale inquiries for all Exit product, please contact me to discuss things further.
